Collection: Shirley Howells

Born August, 1934 in Cape Town, Shirley has been painting since 1985. Although she has worked in all media, and is an Associate of the Watercolour Society of South Africa, for most of her work she now uses oils exclusively.   

Since 1995 she has won numerous awards for both drawing and painting, and continues to be a sought after artist in both South Africa and Abroad. She has also been published in art publications in the USA and South Africa.

Shirley is a people watcher and as such, the greater majority of her work is around and about people, ordinary people going about their everyday lives. She has a great love of portraiture and uses as her inspiration the elderly, the homeless, labourers and workers painted from photographs taken over the years on her travels both in South Africa and Abroad.

Painting continues to be a passion and has become an ongoing journey of exploration and discovery.
